Artist Team: GreenLight

Artists Sarita Baker, Allen Kind (woodworker, Journeyman), Shane Pointe (Musqueum Elder/wood carver) and Aaron Nelson-Moody (Squamish wood carver) joined forces to create the GreenLight team. Through our cultural collaboration, we model a way forward through Reconciliation. This work, titled, “River Whorl” was the winner of a Vancity competition. The essence of each collaborative project is the creation of a legacy: the artwork, which reveals the beauty of openness, understanding and diversity.

Artists Sarita Baker, Allen Kind (woodworker, Journeyman), Shane Pointe (Musqueum Elder/wood carver) and Aaron Nelson-Moody (Squamish wood carver) joined forces to create the GreenLight team. This work, another Vancity competition winner titled, “We Are One,” models a pathway forward through reconciliation: being led by the North Star (centre), the welcoming Musqueum hand gesture of different skin colours, and the healing plants (stinging nettles and Devil’s Claw).

Sustainable Sculpture

Baker, S. Silent Guitar. Broken guitar refashioned via an artistic process into new guitar-esque shelves, various salvaged and reclaimed wood, plants. 2021

Sustainable art’s primary concern is using material in a sustainable way. In this case, materials are recycled from discarded objects, and refashioned via an artistic process, essentially extending lifespan and keeping materials out of landfills.

Site-Specific Public Art

“There were no benches around the Ring Road at Uvic, so I made some,” says Sarita. “Except mine have doorbells so you can ring over to the other bench, and they can ring you back. It’s art that makes you giggle.”
